Absolute Ann Arbor - The Washtenaw County Historical Consortium

The Washtenaw County Historical Consortium

I enjoy history. I was surrounded with history growing up. I was raised in a home built in 1842 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, lots of aunts and uncles who knew their roots and could produce a detailed family genealogy. I majored in history in college, and traveled to historical places. Even to this day, when I take a trip, I always research the area to see what historical events took place around the location. For me, that is a treat.

For you, history might equate to only dates in time but the visual aspects of history can delight you. You are so lucky to live/work in Washtenaw County--it is steeped in a variety of historical venues within a walk or a 20-minute drive.

That is why I want to tell you about the Washtenaw County Historical Consortium.
This organization represents over 25 historical organizations and agencies throughout the county—historic homes, farms, depots, blacksmith shop, mills, churches, schoolhouses, the Detroit Observatory, museums with historical collections, and two libraries for historical or genealogical research.

Summer is a great time to take a drive on one of 4 historical tours in the county or to visit Sharon Mills in the western part of the county for a picnic, to have your kids delight at all the fire trucks at the Firehouse Museum in Ypsilanti, to witness life in the 1800’s at Cobblestone Farm (Ann Arbor) or Rentschler Farm (Saline) with both farms having animals. The possibilities are endless. Visit the Washtenaw County Historical Consortium web site for more information: www.hvcn.org/info/wchs/consortium

Manitou Beach, MI Local History
Manitou is an Indian word meaning “great spirit,” either good or evil. According to legend, a family tragedy earned Devil's Lake its name. Despite being a strong swimmer, the daughter of Pottawatomie Chief Meteau drowned in the lake. Her body was never recovered, and the Chief believed that evil spirits had stolen her.
